There are 8 weeks postpartum maternity leave (Mutterschutz) in Germany. However, since the day the baby is born, the Elternzeit (12 months for the mother, or 14 months to be shared between both parents) also begins. Does it mean that Elternzeit INCLUDES and COVERS the 8 weeks maternity leave? Some people say yes, some people say no. It’d be great if someone could help clarify.

For the mother the parental leave only begins after the end of the maternity leave that is 8 weeks long, starting from the child birth. This means the maternity protection is being credited to the parental leave.
